Kirtipur Indrayani Jatra: Celebrating Victory Over Evil and Brotherhood
Nepal is a country with diverse cultural and religious traditions, and the Kirtipur Indrayani Jatra is a vivacious festival that adds to its cultural richness. This festival is celebrated annually in Kirtipur, one of the seven different places where the Satgaule Jatra is celebrated. The festival is a celebration of victory over evil and a symbol of brotherhood among the people of these seven different areas.
The legend behind the celebration of Indrayani Jatra in Kirtipur dates back to the period of Malla King Ratna Malla, where a demon resided in Kirtipur, and one member from each house used to be sacrificed for the welfare of the village. However, the Prince, who was actually the Goddess Indrayani in disguise, came to their house in need of shelter, and upon learning of the sacrifice, he offered to go in their place. He then defeated the demon and helped the village get rid of it. The festival is celebrated till today in the memory of that victory.
The festival is celebrated amid much fanfare, and hundreds of people from around the valley come to witness it every year. Kirtipur Indrayani Jatra is a celebration of cultural and historical importance, where participants take away happiness and rejuvenation. The festival is not only significant to Kirtipur but also to the entire country, as it represents the victory of good over evil and the importance of brotherhood among people.
